Columbia, S.C. – BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina announced today that it has been awarded Health Plan 7.1 accreditation from URAC, a Washington, DC-based health care accrediting organization that establishes quality standards for the health care industry. The Health Plan Accreditation program is for organizations seeking a comprehensive review of their operations.
“This is a rigorous process taking many months. URAC’s accreditations focus on the areas of greatest importance to consumers, regulators, and payers – providing timely access to services, ensuring the quality of those services, and protecting the interests and rights of consumers,” said BlueCross President Jim Deyling. “Beginning in 2014, health plans offered on new health insurance marketplaces must be in the process of seeking accreditation. To have an impartial, premier accrediting organization such as URAC conclude that we are conducting business consistent with national standards is a mark of excellence.”
“By applying for and receiving Health Plan 7.1, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina has demonstrated a commitment to quality health care,” said Alan P. Spielman, URAC president and CEO. “Quality health care is crucial to our nation’s welfare and it is important to have organizations that are willing to measure themselves against national standards.”
The accreditation is effective for three years. The five sections in the Health Plan standards –
network management, quality improvement, credentialing; member protection and utilization management – comprise more than 146 standards that must be met (www.urac.org/programs).
