Columbia, S.C. – While the employees of BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina
serve their fellow citizens every day at work, they also give back to the community out of their own pockets – this year to the tune of $2,519,530.
BlueCross is one of the state’s largest companies, with a workforce of 9,200 in South Carolina out of 12,000 corporate wide. While the corporation supports a foundation that awards grants to South Carolina-based health care nonprofits, the company also authorizes major workplace fund-raising campaigns run by the employees.
“As a longtime corporate citizen, we’ve always said that a healthy community is more than just healthy people. It’s being actively involved. I’m proud, and not surprised, that my fellow BlueCross employees give their time, talents and money to benefit those who don’t have the resources to do for themselves,” said BlueCross CEO David Pankau.
This year, the larger campaigns raised funds for the American Heart Association, Palmetto Place (children’s shelter), Healthy Learners (removing health barriers to education), Sistercare (services for battered women and children), and the United Way. In addition, employees brought 14,500 pounds of food to work to donate to Harvest Hope food bank, and filled 3,500 children’s holiday stockings to give to the Salvation Army for needy families. Most of these campaigns took place at the Columbia offices where the majority of employees are located.
Offices in Camden, Florence, Surfside Beach, Charleston and Greenville raised more than $55,000 for local nonprofits, including Manna House Lighthouse Ministries, Pee Dee Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Operation We Care SC, Ronald McDonald House of Charleston, Fisher House and the American Diabetes Association.
Headquartered in Columbia, S.C., and operating in South Carolina for more than 65 years, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. The only South Carolina-owned and operated health insurance carrier, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina comprises more than 47 companies involved in health insurance services, U.S. DoD health program and Medicare contracts, other insurance and employee benefits services, and a philanthropic foundation that funds programs to improve health care and access to health care for South Carolinians.
