Overseas Option for S.C. BlueCross Members Featured on "NBC Nightly News"

May 16, 2007

Columbia, S.C. -- An option for overseas medical treatment available to all BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina and BlueChoice® HealthPlan of South Carolina members has received national television coverage from NBC Nightly News.

NBC Correspondent Dawn Fratangelo interviewed BlueCross executive David Boucher for a story that aired Tuesday, May 15. The story was part of an NBC Nightly News series titled "Your Health: Taking Control."

Through Columbia, S.C.-based Companion Global Healthcare Inc., BlueCross and BlueChoice HealthPlan members interested in medical procedures at U.S.-accredited facilities overseas have a single launch point for appointments, information, travel services and access to aftercare.

Companion Global Healthcare recently affiliated with JCI-accredited Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand, as the first hospital in its overseas network, and with World Access for travel services.

"This was all about choice and affordable access to care," Boucher, assistant vice president of Health Care Services for Companion Global Healthcare and BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, told NBC.

Treatment overseas is becoming an option for Americans who are uninsured, those with high-deductible health plans, those seeking specialty care not widely available in the United States, and those seeking procedures not covered by insurance.

The Companion Global Healthcare model is the first of its kind in South Carolina and among the first in the United States. S.C. BlueCross and BlueChoice HealthPlan members have access to the program by visiting the Discounts & Value-Added page at www.SouthCarolinaBlues.com or www.BlueChoiceSC.com, or by calling 1-877-232-0765.

BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina and BlueChoice HealthPlan of South Carolina are headquartered in Columbia, S.C. BlueChoice HealthPlan of South Carolina is a wholly owned subsidiary of BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, and both are independent licensees of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, an association of independent Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans. BlueChoice is a registered mark of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
