June 19, 2007

Columbia, S.C. -- BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina has created a new senior management position to oversee the National Alliance work the company performs for other BlueCross plans and has named W. Michael Griggs to head the unit.

Griggs was appointed senior vice president of the National Alliance line of business within the BlueCross BlueShield division.

"Our work with other Blue plans has gotten to be such a major component of what we do and so strategically important to us that we picked one of our most experienced veterans to run and grow this business," said BlueCross BlueShield Division President David Pankau. "Putting someone like Mike over National Alliance will provide the focused attention necessary for successful sales, management and operations for this business segment."

A 35-year veteran of BlueCross BlueShield, Griggs joined the company in 1972 as a group sales representative. He progressed through marketing management ranks and was promoted to marketing vice president in 1987, responsible for marketing, sales and account management for large groups in South Carolina, national accounts and contracts with other Blue plans. Griggs also chairs the Southern Marketing Network, a marketing coalition of 10 BlueCross BlueShield companies.

Griggs earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial management from Clemson University and a Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) designation from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and the International Foundation of Employee Benefits. He has served on the boards at Spring Valley Education Foundation and the Ronald McDonald House and is currently a member of the Columbia Rotary Club.
