S.C. BlueCross Names Dr. Laura Long to Lead Health and Disease Management Outcomes Programs

Columbia, S.C. --BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina has named Dr. Laura Long to a new position, vice president of clinical quality and health management.

In her new position, Long will lead the company's efforts in provider transparency initiatives, clinical quality improvement, health and disease management strategies and programs, and clinical pharmacy management.

"Consumerism and transparency in health care are gaining momentum as the cost of health care continues to rise. Our customers increasingly want to reduce costs in their health plans through health and disease management programs and through provider cost and quality transparency initiatives. Further, consumers are looking for tools to help them navigate the health care system," said David Pankau, BlueCross BlueShield division president.

"Dr. Long will provide additional leadership to continue our focus on these areas and will help crystallize our ongoing efforts. Dr. Long has great credentials and a proven track record of success which will further advance our programs," he said.

Long previously served as chief medical officer and vice president of health services at BlueChoice® HealthPlan of South Carolina, where she was responsible for medical and pharmacy management, quality improvement, disease management, wellness, and credentialing activities.

Prior to joining BlueChoice HealthPlan, she was responsible for the management of the seven-hospital system of the S.C. Department of Mental Health.

A graduate of Duke University, she received her M.D. degree from the Medical College of Virginia. After completing her residency at the University of South Carolina in preventive medicine and public health, she held several positions in geriatrics with increasing levels of management responsibility. She continues as a clinical assistant professor for USC in the department of family and preventive medicine as well as maintaining an adjunct appointment to the department of internal medicine.

Long has had numerous peer-reviewed papers published and has served on a variety of community boards and committees. She currently serves on the board of Family Connection of South Carolina.
