Columbia, S.C. – BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina announced today it will host community events in Columbia, Charleston and Greenville to celebrate the Fourth Annual National Walk @ Lunch Day on Wednesday, April 28, 2010.
National Walk @ Lunch Day, created by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, is a workplace walking program that encourages people to walk for 30 minutes daily during their lunch breaks to improve their health. Most Americans’ schedules are built around the workday, so lunchtime walks are designed to fit into — not compete with — their daily routines.
S.C. BlueCross will hold community walks from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on April 28 at the Statehouse in Columbia; at Marion Square Park in Charleston; and at Falls Park in Greenville. The events are free of charge and open to the public. A walking course, health and fitness information, entertainment and giveaways will be part of the fun at each location.
BlueCross sponsored walks in Columbia, Charleston and Greenville for the first time last year, and approximately 3,000 people participated. Those who cannot attend one of the community events are encouraged to walk at or near their workplaces. BlueCross has posters, fliers and information to assist companies wishing to hold a walk for their own employees. For more information, call Glenn Niemiec at 803-264-4612.
“In addition to those who attended our community walks last year, thousands more marked National Walk @ Lunch Day by walking outside their workplaces,” said David Pankau, president and chief operating officer of BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina. “Most of us have hectic schedules with work, family and other commitments, but it is important that we make time for exercise and improving our health. Lunchtime walks are a great way to do that.”
Research shows that moderate exercise, like brisk walks on a regular basis, can have significant health benefits, such as helping individuals manage weight, strengthen muscles, reduce stress, and lower their risk of heart attack, stroke and diabetes.
Headquartered in Columbia, S.C., BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
