S.C. BlueCross Challenges Companies to Hold Lunchtime Walks April 28

March 22, 2011

Columbia, S.C. – BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina will hold lunchtime walks for its employees as it celebrates the fifth annual National Walk @ Lunch Day® on Thursday, April 28. The company is challenging other employers across the state to participate as well.

National Walk @ Lunch Day is a national program created by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association to encourage individuals to live healthier lives by walking during their lunch breaks. Once a year, Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies ask employers to host or participate in lunchtime walks. Just 30 minutes of walking or other moderate exercise several times per week can have significant health benefits.

S.C. BlueCross will provide planning guides and print-ready files for banners, fliers and other promotional materials to help any South Carolina company organize a workplace walk. For more information, call Glenn Niemiec at 803-264-4612.

“National Walk @ Lunch Day helps make our employees aware of the importance of just taking time to get moving,” said Karen McGregor, payroll/human resources administrator for Computer Dynamics Inc. in Greenville, S.C. “I enjoy Walk @ Lunch Day, and hope I can inspire others to see the importance of walking not just one day a year, but making it a lifestyle change.”

For those who live or work near the downtown areas of Columbia, Charleston, Greenville or Spartanburg, BlueCross will hold its annual National Walk @ Lunch Day community walks from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. April 28. The events, which are free of charge and open to the public, will include walking courses, health and fitness information, entertainment and giveaways. Locations are the Statehouse in Columbia, Marion Square in Charleston, Falls Park in Greenville, and Morgan Square in Spartanburg.

“National Walk @ Lunch Day is an ideal time for companies to promote the health benefits of regular exercise to their workers,” said David Pankau, president and CEO of BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina. “Walking during lunch breaks allows busy workers to fit exercise into their schedules.”
