Patient Review of Physicians

May 11, 2012

In July 2012, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association will allow Blue members to view and post physician reviews based on their experiences as patients. This new online tool will be on the Blue National Doctor & Hospital FinderSM beginning July 1, 2012. We will begin displaying reviews in our secure online tools beginning in 2013.
Patient reviews provide insight into your patients’ experiences. The reviews also can attract new patients to your practice. Patient reviews are one of many factors people consider when choosing a provider. Research shows that such reviews are in high consumer demand. Approximately 85–90 percent of patient reviews are positive. Encourage your patients to post reviews. They may increase your overall ratings.

The Association has implemented a strict process for when patients post reviews.

  1. The tool will verify the member visited the physician.
  2. The member will respond to questions that cover his or her overall experience.
  3. The Association will check the review to make sure it is appropriate before posting.

Beginning in 2013, you will be able to respond to patient reviews by logging into My Insurance ManagerSM. You will have one opportunity to respond to each patient review.
The Association designed patient reviews to deliver valid and trustworthy data. This will provide insights into your patients’ experiences. It will also complement your practice improvement efforts. We welcome the opportunity to discuss this new program with you. For more information about the physician review tool, please contact us at 803-264-4730 or Provider.Education@bcbssc.com.
