BlueEssentialsSM Individual and Family Plans

BlueEssentials plans are Affordable Care Act (ACA) compliant and offer your employees many choices for great health care coverage. These plans are divided into two categories: metallic plans (Gold, Silver and Bronze) and the Catastrophic plan. With any BlueEssentials plan, your employees will have access to the broad BlueEssentials provider network and award-winning customer service you expect from BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina.

What Are the Differences Between Gold, Silver and Bronze Plans?

Each plan covers the same set of minimum essential health benefits. While the range of benefits is the same among the plans, the value of the benefits will vary. For example, copayments, coinsurance or deductibles vary between each plan. To view the benefits and features of each BlueEssentials plan, download the brochure.

What Is the BlueEssentials Catastrophic Plan?

Anyone can buy a metallic plan, but only adults under the age of 30 and individuals who cannot afford coverage can purchase a Catastrophic plan. A member with this type of plan will be responsible for all his or her medical costs until he or she meets the plan's deductible. Deductibles for the Catastrophic plan are higher than those of metallic plans, however, monthly premiums are usually lower.

If you have an employee over age 30 who would like to purchase a Catastrophic plan, he or she must receive certification from the Federally Facilitated Marketplace (FFM). It must state this person is exempt from the individual mandate because he or she does not have an affordable coverage option or he or she qualifies for a hardship exemption.

View the BlueEssentials brochure for information on the Catastrophic plan.
