BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Listed on InformationWeek 500 Company Made the List based on its Healthcare Swipe Card Project

August 15, 2006

Manhasset, N.Y. & Columbia, S.C. -- BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina today announced that it has been listed on the InformationWeek 500 list. The top 2006 InformationWeek 500 companies will be revealed at a gala awards ceremony held during the InformationWeek 500 Conference in Rancho Mirage, Calif., September 10-13.

For the past 18 years InformationWeek has identified and honored the nation's most innovative users of information technology with its annual listing. The list is unique among corporate rankings because it spotlights the power of innovation in information technology, rather than simply identifying the biggest IT spenders.

"The InformationWeek 500 honors today’s leading companies who set the benchmark for business technology strategies and projects," said InformationWeek publishing director Fritz Nelson. "The companies on our list are some of the most innovative users of technology."

"One of our greatest strengths for the multiple business types that we serve is our information systems and our ability to innovate using those systems," said BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina CIO Stephen K. Wiggins. "Our most recent innovation was the development of a combined healthcare and financial swipe card product used in doctor’s offices to check insurance eligibility, adjudicate claims, and process credit or debit card transactions over the Internet."

The project was developed by BlueCross and resulted in a swipe card box product called Companion Direct Point of Care launched by Companion Technologies in South Carolina in the third quarter last year.
